Ofsted praises Bohunt School Worthing’s ambitious curriculum and welcoming atmosphere

Following a recent Ofsted inspection, Bohunt Worthing has been awarded “Good”. Inspectors praised the school and Bohunt Education Trust for working hard to ensure ‘the best interests of students are met’, and that students enjoy their learning and achieve well. 

Amongst the many positive areas highlighted about the school, inspectors complimented the teaching and learning provision, recognising that the curriculum is well-planned and ‘ambitious’. Similarly, they commended the welcome and inclusive atmosphere, which makes students feel safe and well supported through positive relationships with staff, and respect for their peers. Most importantly, Ofsted recognised that this ‘overwhelmingly positive’ view was shared by parents and carers.

Some other key insights from the report include:

• Staff have warm relationships with students and know them well, in turn making students feel safe.  

• The school offers an ‘exceptional’ number of extra-curricular clubs, activities, and trips. These cater for a wide range of talents and interests, including sport and the arts, and the take up is high. Leaders also ensure that disadvantaged pupils benefit from the activities on offer.

• Staff were praised for their good subject knowledge and for teaching enthusiastically, alongside delivering the ‘broad and ambitious’ curriculum developed by the school and Trust well.  

• Lessons are ‘purposeful’, and students have ‘positive attitudes to learning’. 

• Key Stage 4 students can choose from a wide range of academic and vocational subjects, highlighting our commitment to providing students with a diverse range of learning opportunities. 

• Inspectors noted that the school is very well led and managed, with the Trust providing ‘valuable expertise and support’ to school leaders and staff, with staff receiving good training.

• The Trust’s vision of ‘enjoy, respect, achieve’ is being realised.

• Students are very clear about the school’s expectations for behaviour. 

• Staff understand the needs of pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

The ambitious school is looking forward to work with staff, families, governors and the Trust as it continuing to build on its solid foundation. This includes implementing further processes to ensure that high standards continue to be upheld and embedded throughout the school.
