Professor Robert Winston Officially Opens First Bohunt Sixth Form

Students and staff at the new Bohunt Sixth Form in Liphook have this week welcomed world-renowned scientist, Professor Robert Winston, to declare it officially open at a special launch event.

Guest of Honour Professor Winston provided an inspiring speech entitled ‘Why Bother with Science?’ to students at Bohunt School – which shares the same site as the new sixth form – as well as GCSE students from The Petersfield School (TPS). He also gave an address to the students currently enrolled at the new sixth form.

Later in the day, Professor Winston was given a tour of the state-of-the-art building by sixth form students Molly Reckord, John Galbraith and Isabel Broadmeadow, before formally opening the building with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony.

Professor Winston’s appearance at the event is reflective of the ambitious, innovative approach to education, championed by the sixth form’s sponsor, Bohunt Education Trust (BET). The Trust delivers a range of game-changing teaching programmes, including the creative arts – with examples of projects including university-style collaborations on compositions with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and a strong focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

As part of the new build, Bohunt Sixth Form has a range of facilities tailored specifically to meet the needs of A Level study, from undergraduate style laboratories and ‘idea walls’ encouraging group work, to a computer science room with high specification computers, a creative visual arts room, and music rooms with high-spec recording facilities. The bespoke curriculum on offer includes three programmes of study and is aimed at giving students a taste of undergraduate study, preparing them for university life, in addition to practical skills needed for future employment.

The sixth form is providing high-quality education to young people across Hampshire, and builds on the excellence of BET’s existing schools, including Bohunt School, which is rated Outstanding in every category by Ofsted and has Teaching School status. The next Open Evening at Bohunt Sixth Form is on 2 July 2018.

Molly Reckord, a Y12 at Bohunt Sixth Form said:

“It was amazing to meet Lord Winston. A Child Against All Odds is in Bohunt Sixth Form library and I have been reading it. Lord Winston was very interested in our future plans for medicine and told us our brains are extremely important – and not to hurt them!”

Maia Daborn, also a Y12 student said:

“Lord Winston was kind enough to offer me work experience in his laboratory over the summer. I feel incredibly lucky to have met him today and to have been offered this opportunity – he is a real hero of mine!”

Neil Strowger, Chief Executive Officer at Bohunt Education Trust (BET), said:

“The opening of our inaugural sixth form is a hugely exciting milestone and we are delighted to have welcomed Professor Robert Winston to declare Bohunt Sixth Form officially open.

At Bohunt, we have the highest expectations of our staff and students and are relentless in our pursuit of excellence in education. Our commitment to and passion for science is intrinsic to Bohunt and it is fitting that our students have had the amazing opportunity to listen, learn and be inspired by Professor Winston – a leading figure in the field.”

Clare Hodgson, Head of Bohunt Sixth Form, said:

“We were honoured to welcome Professor Winston to open Bohunt Sixth Form. Since we opened our doors to students last September, we have offered outstanding teaching, unrivalled learning environments and personalised support to our students.

It has been fantastic to see our first cohort, currently enrolled at Bohunt Sixth Form, embracing and enjoying their studies. We look forward to continuing to work with and support them to achieve their full potential – and to welcoming new students to our sixth form this September.”
