The Costello School Begins Process to Join High Performing Bohunt Education Trust

02/08/2018

The Costello School has announced it will begin formal negotiations to join Bohunt Education Trust (BET), a leading Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) based in the south of England.

Since the start of the year, BET has been providing support to The Costello School in the form of an acting head, Philip Avery, the Director of Education at BET. This provision has included short-term resources, advice and support to the secondary school in Basingstoke, which is rated Good by Ofsted.

Hilary Todd, Chair of Governors at The Costello School, said,

“The support lent by BET to The Costello School has been invaluable. Due to their long-standing track record of leading and improving schools the governors have decided to take our relationship with BET to the next stage.

Costello’s results in the recently announced Progress 8 league tables (which monitors a pupil’s progress made in eight subjects between the end of primary school and GCSEs) place it very close to the top school in Basingstoke. We could continue the school’s journey of improvement on our own; however, the Governing Body believes that the support of BET will allow us to further develop and improve more quickly, using tried and tested strategies and methods of support, and help us strive to be the standout school in the area.”

The Costello School has considered a number of potential Multi Academy Trust partners over the last six months, supported by the Regional School Commissioner’s Office.

Ray Morton, Chair of Bohunt Education Trust, said:

“We are delighted the governors at Costello have decided to take the next step in seeking to join our Trust and have been impressed and invigorated by the students, staff, parents and governors at The Costello School.

Bohunt schools are characterised by high standards and a focus on achievement across all areas of school life. Above all, the decision to progress talks with us has the interests of both pupils and staff as the highest priority. All of us at BET are looking forward to continuing to improve the quality of teaching and learning and working with all at Costello to do so.”

Legal due diligence and negotiation on areas such as finance and governance will be taken before the partnership is solidified.
